Our Facilities – Gateway Mercy Orphanage
About Gateway Mercy Orphanage / Gateway Mercy Ministries
Gateway Mercy Orphanage is located in Natete, a suburb of Kampala, Uganda. The orphanage has been supported primarily through the efforts of a group from Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, led by Promise board members Wayne and Carol Housewright. It was founded by Jovia Kabuye, who came to America to work and make money for her children's education. Upon returning to Uganda, Jovia took in neighborhood children, many of whom had no homes or relatives to care for them, creating a small orphanage and school. Jovia passed away in 2006, but today the entire Kabuye family is involved in operating the children's orphanage. It is led by Jovia's daughters Rebecca Nakabuye and Sylivia Nakabuye, who earned her degree in education.

The Gateway Mercy Orphanage currently has 51 children in residence. With a limited budget, its directors tirelessly attempt to provide for the children's daily needs through housing and education. Unfortunately, the facility itself is in deteriorating and unsanitary conditions, located in a slum area near a swamp.
Despite this, Gateway has been the only place where these children have been able to secure a safe place to live off the streets, get at least one good meal a day, receive spiritual nurturing, and obtain schooling.
Promise International's vision at Gateway is to build a village of five homes that would each accommodate 10 children and be overseen by a house matron. These homes would encircle a central school and community facility with classrooms. To help the facility become self-sustaining, we desire to acquire additional land that can be used to grow vegetables and other crops, with space for raising chickens and livestock.
How Promise International helps
The orphanage relies entirely on the support provided by Promise International to pay for the youngsters' nutritional needs, school supplies and basics of daily living. In the midst of their environment, these children embrace our Lord and celebrate their lives each and every day, though the guidance of the good women who run this home.
